The Commissioner of Police, Ms Dinah Marathe has said Botswana Police Service continues enjoying good cordial relationship with United States of America (USA).

Ms Marathe made the statement during a courtesy call paid by the Regional Security Officer at Embassy of the USA based in Botswana, Mr Oliver Lin-Justiniano at Police Headquarters today (28th May 2024).

Ms Marathe said that the bilateral relations that exist between Botswana and the US government over the years, has helped the BPS through the provision of technical training and development opportunities through the support of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Federal Law Enforcement Training Centre (FLTEC) among other.

She said it was through the co-hosting of the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) for Sub-Saharan Africa that the BPS continues to benefit in the enrolment of its officers in courses offered at the facility.

Ms Marathe said that she was hopeful that through their continued collaboration BPS will continue to benefit, more especially on empowerment of police officers on tackling transnational organised crimes such as cybercrime, drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorism threats.

On the issues of crime, the Commissioner said crime in Botswana was still manageable except for offences such as Gender Based Violence and Cybercrime. She however assured Mr Lin-Justiniano, that that the police have reinforced policing efforts and strategies aimed at combating afore-mentioned crimes.

For his part Mr Lin-Justiniano said he was grateful of the warm welcome accorded to him by the Commissioner. Mr Justiniano also appreciated the long-standing relations between Botswana and USA. He said USA is committed to assisting the BPS where there’s need.

Mr Lin-Justiniano was accompanied by the Senior Foreign Service National Investigator, Regional Security Office at the US Embassy Mr Thatayaone Kule.
