This morning, the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs offices witnessed an impressive turnout of young people eager to participate in the Agricultural Data Collection Survey. In collaboration with Statistics Botswana, the ministry is seeking eligible youth aged 18 to 35 to take part in this year-long initiative, scheduled to run from January to December 2025.

The high attendance underscores the growing interest among Botswana’s youth in initiatives that contribute to the nation’s development while creating meaningful employment opportunities.

A Vital National Survey

The Agricultural Data Collection Survey aims to gather critical information about the country’s agricultural sector, including crop production, livestock numbers, and emerging farming trends. This data will provide essential insights for policymakers, helping to shape strategies for food security, sustainable farming practices, and rural development.

By engaging youth in this survey, the initiative not only collects valuable data but also empowers young people to take a more active role in Botswana’s agricultural sector.

Opportunities for Youth

Participants in the survey will undergo training in data collection and analysis, equipping them with valuable skills in research and statistics. For many, this represents an opportunity to enhance their employability, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to a sector critical to Botswana’s economy.

Speaking at the recruitment event, a representative from the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs stated, “This initiative is not just about data collection; it’s about involving young people in shaping the future of agriculture in Botswana. Their participation is a step toward modernizing the sector and addressing youth unemployment.”

Strong Response from the Youth

The overwhelming response from the youth reflects their readiness to seize opportunities that contribute to national progress. Many young attendees expressed excitement about being part of an initiative that combines employment with the chance to make a tangible impact on the country’s agricultural development.

One of the applicants, 24-year-old Tumelo Dube, shared, “This is a great opportunity for us as young people. Agriculture is vital for our country, and being part of this project allows us to contribute directly to its growth while learning new skills.”

A Year of Impact

As the survey kicks off in January 2025, it is expected to generate valuable insights for stakeholders in agriculture, from farmers to government agencies. Additionally, the active involvement of the youth in this process highlights their role as change-makers in Botswana’s path toward sustainable development.

The partnership between the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs and Statistics Botswana sets a strong example of how collaboration can create meaningful opportunities for young people while addressing critical national needs. This initiative is a testament to the potential of Botswana’s youth to drive progress and innovation in key sectors.
