Job Summary
To assist the medical staff in the provision of care to patients.
Minimum requirements
 O ’level
 One year in a health related environment
 Auxiliary Training
Key Effectiveness Areas
 Recommends and incorporates cost saving initiatives into budgets.
 Provides nursing related duties for in patients ( personal hygiene ) by :
– Bathing new born babies and non-ambulant patients in bed
– Assisting patients with needs such as combing hair, cutting fingernails etc.
– Care of back and pressure parts to stimulates blood circulation.
 Makes beds as required
 Assists in lifting /changing position of the patient
 Provides nutritional care to patients by:
– Dishing and serving patients meals according to prescription
– Feeding patients who cannot feed themselves
– Feeding newborn babies
 Assists patients by:
– Offering and distributing bed-pans and urinals and vomits to patients with due care to
provision of privacy
– Assisting patients to get into the bedpan
– Measuring stools, urine, sputum and vomit observe for odour, consistency, volume and
report findings to nursing staff
– Cleaning and disinfecting bedpans
 Provides care to patients (control of patients) by:
– Directing & ushering patients to various areas of the hospital
– Distributing patients files to and collecting from consulting rooms and wards
– Checking patients’ vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, blood sugar levels,
weight, etc).
 Assists in the transportation of bodies from wards to the mortuary as well as shrouding
dead bodies.
 Transports patients within different areas of the hospital and accompanies patients toother
health care institutions
 Interprets for patients where there are language barriers
 Performs messenger duties as directed by professional health workers
 Checks and replace expired sterile packs in area of work
 Washes and disinfects instruments after surgical procedures
 Assembles and packs instruments sets and linen for autoclaving (theatre) according to
procedure
 Cleans and disinfects equipment e.g. wheelchairs, beds and trolleys
 Mixing disinfectants according to standards
 Takes cognizance of and adheres to hospital policies, procedures and initiatives regarding
customer service
 Adheres to safety, health and environmental programs in area of responsibility
