UB Students Burn The BOT50 Zebra And National Flag As They Strike Over Delayed Allowance

University of Botswana students have started a violent strike today, around lunch time which led to some property damage by the circle leading up to the Marina circle. They burnt the zebras statue together with Botswana flags and threatened to destroy more property if they are not paid their overdue student allowances.

Apparently the students signed a MOU with DTEF to be payed living allowances for entire duration of studyand they claim the Government is not delivering.  This is not the first time the Zebra has been vandalized, last year before Independence, some people were taking pictures riding on it, until it gave in and fell down. The angry students have now gone to the extend of loitering from the neighboring Shoppers Supermarket.

The UB SRC has vowed to continue with student demonstrations until all student allowances are credited into the accounts of those owed. Classes at the University have been suspended since yesterday. We hope an amicably agreement can be met and everything will go back to normal. Education remains one of the best keys to a brighter future.
