Kaizer Chiefs’ defender and Botswana international, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, has finalized a transfer to Libyan football giants Al-Ittihad. The deal, valued at approximately $850,000 (R15.7 million), secures Ditlhokwe’s services for the next two and a half years.

Ditlhokwe, 26, joined Kaizer Chiefs at the start of the 2023/24 season from SuperSport United. Initially, he formed a solid central defensive partnership with Given Msimango, making 20 starts across all competitions. However, the arrivals of Miguel Inacio and Rushwin Dortley saw his role diminish under coach Nasreddine Nabi. A turning point came on November 2, 2024, when Inacio’s red card against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout provided Ditlhokwe an opportunity. Since then, he has made eight starts, primarily as a left-back, showcasing his versatility and resilience.

Al-Ittihad, based in Tripoli, has been active in the transfer market, recently acquiring Ditlhokwe’s Botswana national teammate, Tumisang Orebonye, from AS FAR Rabat for $500,000 (R9.2 million). The club also secured Egyptian striker Mahmoud Kahraba from Al Ahly. These signings reflect Al-Ittihad’s ambition to strengthen their squad as they currently sit fourth in the Libya West Group standings.

Ditlhokwe’s departure presents a challenge for Kaizer Chiefs, especially with the Premier Soccer League transfer window closed, limiting immediate replacement options. Coach Nabi may now rely on players like Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane to fill the left-back position. Despite the timing, the transfer fee and Ditlhokwe’s desire for consistent playing time likely influenced the club’s decision to proceed with the deal.

On the international stage, Ditlhokwe has been a pivotal figure for Botswana, captaining the national team to only their second Africa Cup of Nations qualification. His leadership and defensive prowess have been instrumental in the Zebras’ recent successes.

As Ditlhokwe embarks on this new chapter with Al-Ittihad, he reunites with Orebonye, aiming to make a significant impact in Libyan football. His journey underscores the dynamic nature of football careers and the opportunities that arise within the African football landscape.
