On November 19, 2024, President Duma Boko delivered his much-anticipated State of the Nation Address (SONA24) at the Parliament chambers in Gaborone. With a focus on transparency and accountability, the President outlined bold measures to strengthen Botswana’s democratic institutions and reinforce public trust.

Strengthening Anti-Corruption Institutions

President Boko emphasized the government’s commitment to combating corruption, which he identified as a major threat to national progress. “We are determined to restore integrity in all sectors of our society by empowering our anti-corruption institutions,” he stated. The President revealed plans to enhance the capabilities of existing watchdogs, ensuring they operate with greater autonomy and efficiency.

A New Independent Anti-Corruption Agency

In a landmark announcement, President Boko disclosed that the government is in the process of establishing an independent anti-corruption agency. This agency will be tasked with eliminating corruption at all levels of governance and society. “Our vision is to create a corruption-free Botswana,” he said, adding that the agency will work closely with civil society, law enforcement, and the judiciary to ensure impartiality and transparency in its operations.

A Holistic Approach to Governance

Beyond anti-corruption measures, the President reiterated the government’s dedication to improving governance structures. He called for the active participation of citizens and stakeholders in shaping policies that reflect collective aspirations. “Botswana’s strength lies in the unity of its people. Together, we can build a nation that thrives on fairness and accountability,” he affirmed.

President Duma Boko’s address was met with optimism and cautious hope. Citizens and political analysts alike see the proposals as a step in the right direction to bolster Botswana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa. However, the implementation of these initiatives will be closely monitored to ensure they bring tangible results.

As Botswana moves forward, #SONA24 serves as a call to action for all citizens to support efforts aimed at rooting out corruption and safeguarding the country’s democratic values. The President’s vision highlights the importance of integrity and collective responsibility in achieving sustainable national development.
