Sir Seretse Khama Remembered as a Nation Builder

His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi described Sir Seretse Khama as a consummate nation builder, a non –racialist and a constitutionalist who believed in the workings of multi-partyism as a laboratory for testing and refining democracy.

His Excellency showed appreciation for Sir Seretse Khama’s great works during Sir Seretse Khama Day commemoration today at Parliamentary grounds in Gaborone . He remembered some of the contributions made by Sir Seretse Khama such as being part of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) delegation who participated in the 1963 constitutional conference negotiating self-government for Batswana and the establishment of the organs of the state for running a government.

Furthermore, His Excellency President Masisi said that upon assuming power as the first president of Botswana, Sir Seretse Khama encouraged Batswana to cherish the practice of democracy, and the use of education as an instrument of manpower development.

In his remarks the former President of Mozambique Dr Joaquim Alberto Chissano expressed his gratitude to His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi E.K.Masisi for inviting him to participate in commemoration of Sir Seretse Khama day. He also thanked the government of Botswana for having supported the liberation struggle of Mozambique.

When welcoming guests, the Minister for State President Mr Kabo Morwaeng described Sir Seretse Khama as a true democrat adding that he was a fountain of knowledge, ideas and wisdom.
