Tennis prodigy Seabo Saleshando has made a strong start to the ITF U18 Gaborone J30 tournament, securing a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Zimbabwe’s Anotipa Ghigudu in the opening round this morning.

As the tournament’s number one seed, Saleshando is expected to progress further and is a strong contender for the title. The competition, currently taking place at the National Tennis Centre in Gaborone, features top young talents from across the region and beyond.

While Saleshando’s win brought optimism for Botswana’s tennis hopes, it was a disappointing day for three other local players, who were eliminated in the first round:

  • Katlego Regoeng lost 1-6, 0-6 to Eithian Pieber (South Africa).
  • Tyson Anderson was defeated 2-6, 2-6 by Mbali Ndlabu (South Africa).
  • Reagile Diraditsile fell 0-6, 3-6 to Matel Sucu (Romania).

Despite the early exits, Saleshando’s performance has kept Botswana’s hopes alive in the tournament. As he continues his campaign, all eyes will be on him to see if he can maintain his form and claim victory on home soil.
