The highly anticipated presidential debate for the 2024 elections in Botswana took place recently, featuring the four leading candidates: His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi E.K. Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana and the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP); Mr. Dumelang Saleshando, President of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP); Mr. Duma Boko, President of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC); and Mr. Mephato Reatile, President of the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF). The debate provided a platform for these leaders to articulate their party manifestos and outline their vision for the country, hoping to secure the support of the electorate.

His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi E.K. Masisi (BDP)

As the incumbent president, Dr. Masisi emphasized continuity and stability in governance. He highlighted the BDP’s achievements over the past years, particularly in economic growth, infrastructure development, and healthcare improvements. Dr. Masisi reiterated his commitment to job creation, emphasizing initiatives aimed at empowering youth and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He argued that under his leadership, Botswana has made significant strides in education and technology, and he promised to continue building on these successes if re-elected.

Mr. Dumelang Saleshando (BCP)

Mr. Saleshando presented a contrasting perspective, focusing on accountability and transparency in government. He criticized the current administration for perceived shortcomings in addressing corruption and promoting good governance. The BCP leader advocated for a more inclusive approach to politics, emphasizing the need to listen to the voices of ordinary citizens. Saleshando’s manifesto included proposals for constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening democracy and enhancing the electoral process. He emphasized that a vote for the BCP is a vote for a government that prioritizes the welfare of its people.

Mr. Duma Boko (UDC)

Mr. Boko took a more assertive stance, positioning the UDC as a viable alternative to the ruling BDP. He highlighted the importance of unity among opposition parties and criticized the BDP for what he termed “mismanagement” of national resources. Boko’s manifesto focused on social justice, environmental sustainability, and healthcare reform. He pledged to address inequality and ensure that marginalized communities receive equitable access to resources and opportunities. His vision for Botswana included a commitment to addressing climate change and enhancing the country’s resilience to environmental challenges.

Mr. Mephato Reatile (BPF)

Lastly, Mr. Reatile presented the BPF’s agenda, which emphasizes nationalism and economic self-sufficiency. He criticized the other parties for neglecting local businesses and proposed policies aimed at boosting indigenous entrepreneurship. Reatile’s manifesto included plans for enhancing agriculture and promoting tourism as key drivers of economic growth. He stressed the importance of national pride and the need to foster a sense of ownership among citizens regarding the country’s resources and development.

The 2024 presidential debate highlighted the diverse visions and strategies proposed by the candidates as they vie for the presidency of Botswana. Each leader articulated their party’s manifesto, addressing critical issues facing the nation, such as economic growth, governance, and social justice. As the election approaches, the debate has provided voters with valuable insights into the candidates’ priorities and the future direction of the country. The electorate will now have to weigh these proposals carefully as they decide which party will lead Botswana in the coming years.
