Just when he landed from Mozambique where there was a meeting for Southern African Development Community (SADC) regarding terrorist attacks at Mozambique, President Masisi spent a few hours then took off for Angola.
President Masisi is now popular for traveling, having travelled out of the country more than ten (10) times in less than a year. The president is going around SADC member states in the name of building bilateral relations while in fact the main reason is campaigning for Mr. Elias Mpedi Magosi for the Executive Secretary of SADC.
With the election date drawing near, the race for the gets even hotter, and the travels are getting frequent, just laat week President Masisi took off for Lesotho.
“We are drawing closer to the month of August of which there will be elections for Ms. Lawrence-Tax’s successor. Angola is SADC member State, as such I am continuing with presenting Elias Magosi, and explaining why he should be voted ” Masisi confessed.
However, he went on to mention that there will be other issues of bilateral relations to be discussed including mineral economic issues. Masisi says since Angola too is a diamond producer, the two countries will talk about how to best utilize the diamonds for the benefit of the two nations, especially that the government of Botswana is in the middle of negotiations with De Beers.
“Remember Angola is an Oil producer, so we’d want to pursue alternative sources for our essential fuels and explore various Opportunities on petroleum value chain” he added.
During lockdown last year, Botswana had an acute shortage of petrol which forced the fuel to be rationed. The shortage was largely due to unrests at the neighbouring South Africa where Botswana imports almost everything.
If the President indeed negotiate with his counterpart in Angola, the importation will be made easy as now Botswana is connected to the rest of SADC through the Kazungula bridge which was recently opened.
