President Masisi Commends UB

His Excellency the President, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has commended the University of Botswana for continuing to take a lead on embarking on sustainable innovations as well as creating solutions that benefit communities. President Masisi said this during the University of Botswana’s 40th graduation ceremony in Gaborone this morning.

He said during the Covid-19 plight, the University of Botswana was at the forefront of research, innovation as well as providing expertise and human resources that contributed to the containment of the spread of the pandemic to reduce mortality levels.

He added that research and innovation are key to uplifting the country’s economy, hence the Government is committed to funding them.

“The Government is doing this in recognition of the significance of new technologies which also form part of the country’s vision for attaining sustainable economic diversification and employment creation among others,” the President said.

He further highlighted that Batswana therefore must be prepared for the technology age, adding that he is confident that the University of Botswana is well on track to prepare them for this. The President acknowledged and paid homage to all Batswana who contributed to the establishment of the University of Botswana saying they have set the standard and sealed the development agenda as a country.

Since its establishment in 1982, the University of Botswana produced more than 84 000 graduates. This has created a wealth of expertise across different spheres of life for Batswana and globally. The President is adamant that this years’ graduands will make the country proud given the quality of education they have received from the University of Botswana.
