After missing a medal by a whisker at the just finished Olympics, the first citizen of the country,His Excellency president Ian Khama gave his full support to the athletes. He also encouraged the nation to do likewise. “We must all of us as a nation commend our athletes for their commitment and dedication after years of hard training and preparation to represent our country on this world stage,” he said on a statement.
“Their hard efforts to proceed in the heats of various codes is not in doubt. They tried their best and we cannot ask them for more than that. They represented us well and for that we should show appreciation.” President Khama also asked critics to stop dwelling on the negatives as it shows immaturity and represents a culture of backwardness.
“Let us welcome them on their return from their tireless efforts and hard work, learn from lessons to be learnt, and start preparing now for the next Olympics in Tokyo and the events leading up to that event such as the All Africa Games, the Commonwealth Games, as well as the World Championships and strive once more as we have in the past to do our best at each occasion,” Khama concluded.
