Gaborone, Botswana – The President of the Republic of Botswana, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, has officially opened the 2024 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Sustainable Energy Week under the theme “Accelerating Sustainable Energy Solutions for an Energy Secure SADC Region.” The high-level event, taking place in Gaborone, brings together government leaders, energy experts, and industry stakeholders to discuss strategies for a more sustainable and secure energy future in the region.
A Call for Prioritizing Sustainable Energy Policies
Delivering the keynote address, President Boko urged all SADC member states to make sustainable energy a top priority in their national agendas. He emphasized the need for strong policies that drive the adoption of renewable energy, enhance energy efficiency, and modernize power infrastructure to ensure long-term energy security and economic growth.
“SADC countries must take decisive action in transitioning to sustainable energy sources. Investing in renewable energy is not just about addressing power shortages; it is about creating a resilient economy, driving industrialization, and improving livelihoods across the region,” said President Boko.
Botswana’s Ambitious Energy Expansion Plans
President Boko also announced Botswana’s ambitious goal to scale up electricity production to at least 8,000 megawatts (MW) within the next four years. As part of this strategy, the country aims to shift towards a solar-dominated energy industry, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and capitalizing on its abundant solar resources.
“We are committed to modernizing Botswana’s power sector with a strategic shift towards solar energy. This move will not only strengthen our energy security but also position Botswana as a leader in sustainable energy solutions within SADC,” he stated.
Energy as a Catalyst for Economic Growth
The President highlighted the critical role of energy provision in job creation and economic development across the region. By investing in renewable energy infrastructure, SADC countries can unlock new employment opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and technology.
“Provision of energy services in the SADC region can create the necessary jobs for our people and for generations to come. Sustainable energy is not just an environmental solution—it is an economic driver that will uplift communities and industries,” he added.
A Regional Push Towards Energy Security
The 2024 SADC Sustainable Energy Week will focus on collaborative solutions for addressing energy challenges, including increasing access to clean energy, strengthening regional power grids, and promoting public-private partnerships in energy investments.
The event will feature expert panel discussions, policy dialogues, and technology showcases aimed at accelerating the adoption of renewable energy solutions. By the end of the conference, stakeholders are expected to develop actionable strategies that will guide the SADC region in achieving energy security and sustainability.
With Botswana leading by example through its solar expansion plans, the event sets the stage for a transformative shift in the region’s energy landscape, ensuring a greener, more resilient future for all SADC nations.
