This afternoon, President Duma Gideon Boko welcomed Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo, Zambia’s Special Envoy and candidate for President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), at the Office of the President in Gaborone. The courtesy visit provided an opportunity for both leaders to exchange views on the future of Africa’s development agenda and the critical role of the Bank in accelerating progress across the continent.
The meeting centered on key thematic areas including sustainable development, infrastructure investment, and regional integration. These areas remain central to the AfDB’s mission and align closely with Botswana’s own strategic priorities.
President Boko reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to supporting institutions and leaders that champion Africa’s development. He highlighted the importance of partnerships rooted in accountability, innovation, and shared prosperity, noting that regional collaboration is essential to address the pressing challenges of economic inequality, climate change, and youth unemployment.
“Botswana remains engaged with efforts that advance inclusive growth, financial stability, and resilient infrastructure across Africa,” said President Boko. “We are open to dialogue with leaders and institutions that contribute meaningfully to the continent’s long-term development goals.”
Dr. Maimbo, a respected economist and development expert, shared his vision for a more agile and responsive African Development Bank—one that listens to member states and delivers impact-driven solutions. He emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with the private sector, expanding support for regional trade, and ensuring that African countries have access to innovative financing for infrastructure and social development.
As the AfDB prepares for its leadership transition, Botswana’s engagement with presidential candidates reflects its broader diplomatic commitment to playing an active role in shaping the future of the continent. The meeting between President Boko and Dr. Maimbo underscored a shared understanding of Africa’s development needs and the value of visionary leadership in advancing them.
Dr. Maimbo’s visit is part of his continent-wide outreach to engage with member countries and share his candidacy platform ahead of the upcoming AfDB elections.
