President Advocate Duma Boko has attributed the ongoing power outages to faults at the Morupule B Power Plant, which is currently failing to generate the required 600MW of electricity. Speaking at a Kgotla meeting in Letlhakeng this morning, President Boko highlighted the persistent challenges facing the coal-fired power plant since its construction, stating that Botswana has not been able to fully reap the benefits of the billion pula investment.
While repairs are ongoing at Morupule B, the government has sought alternative solutions to ease the crisis, including sourcing electricity from Eskom in South Africa. However, President Boko acknowledged that this option is complicated by an outstanding debt of P2.7 billion owed to the South African power utility.
Despite the difficulties, President Boko reassured Letlhakeng residents that his administration remains committed to resolving the electricity crisis. In the meantime, the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has been forced to implement power management measures to balance supply and demand.
The President emphasized that long-term solutions are being explored to ensure energy stability in the country. He urged citizens to remain patient as the government works toward a sustainable resolution to Botswana’s power challenges.
