In a landmark move towards enhancing Botswana’s economic landscape, President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi has officially launched the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport Special Economic Zone (SSKIA SEZ). This ambitious project, which is set to transform the area surrounding Botswana’s largest airport, aims to establish a world-class Airport City, making it a focal point for investment and economic development.

The Significance of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Botswana

Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are pivotal in Botswana’s strategy to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment. The SSKIA SEZ is one of eight designated SEZs in the country, each tailored to foster growth in specific sectors. These zones offer various incentives, including tax breaks, simplified customs procedures, and regulatory support to encourage businesses to establish operations within them.

Botswana stands out as an attractive investment destination due to its political stability, robust legal framework, and commitment to economic diversification. The government has prioritized infrastructure development, ensuring that SEZs like SSKIA benefit from well-planned road, rail, and air connections.

A Mixed-Use Investment Hub

The SSKIA SEZ covers an expansive area of over 800 hectares and is designed as a mixed-use zone that caters to a variety of sectors. The primary focus areas for development within this zone include:

  • Diamond Beneficiation (Polishing and Jewelry)
  • Specialist Automotive
  • Aerospace and Aviation
  • Cargo, Freight, and Logistics
  • Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices
  • Engineering and Electronic Equipment
  • Plastics (Injection Moulding)
  • Agro-Processing

The strategic location adjacent to the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport facilitates seamless access to international markets, enhancing the zone’s appeal for businesses looking to export goods globally. The airport serves as a crucial link, connecting Botswana to regional and international destinations.

Comprehensive Infrastructure Development

To support the SSKIA SEZ, a master plan has been completed, outlining a “Live, Work and Play” environment. The project will include:

  • SSKIA Business Support Centre: An expansion of airport-related businesses, including hotels and conference facilities.
  • SEZ Support Precinct: Centralized office space and business support services.
  • “Edge City”: A mixed-use area with retail and residential facilities to complement economic activities.
  • Industry (East): A clean industrial zone to support manufacturing.
  • Logistics: An expansion of the existing Cargo Terminal to facilitate efficient goods movement.
  • Techno Park (East): A hub for high-tech research and development.
  • Agri-Industry: Areas for agriculture and agri-processing, leveraging water recycling initiatives.
  • Residential Villages: Mixed-use housing to support the SEZ workforce.

Furthermore, a tender for the construction of Boulevard One, a crucial access road, has been awarded. This six-lane dual carriageway will connect the SEZ to Airport Road, enhancing accessibility for investors and facilitating the movement of goods.

Existing Business Landscape

The SSKIA SEZ is already home to several key businesses, including:

  • Debswana Diamond Company: A leading global diamond producer.
  • Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB): Renowned for diamond sorting and valuation.
  • Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS): Responsible for standardization and quality assurance.
  • Bank of Botswana: The central bank’s wing is also located in the SEZ.
  • Botswana Innovation Hub: Fostering technology-based innovation and entrepreneurship.

These existing businesses will not only benefit from the new infrastructure but also contribute to the economic vibrancy of the SEZ.

A Bright Future for Botswana’s Economy

With the launch of the SSKIA SEZ, President Masisi underscores the government’s commitment to creating an investor-friendly environment that promotes economic growth and job creation. By facilitating international business operations and enhancing connectivity, the SSKIA SEZ positions Botswana as a competitive player in the global economy.

As the development progresses, it is expected to attract further investment, drive innovation, and support the country’s long-term economic diversification goals. The SSKIA SEZ represents a significant step forward in realizing Botswana’s vision for a prosperous and sustainable economic future.
