Sejelo police in Kanye are looking for a man who allegedly raped a middle-aged woman and torched a Toyota Vits on Christmas Day.

According to the station commander, Superintendent Mogomotsi Matlapeng, three women who were on their way from a festival on the wee hours of Christmas Day agreed to a request for a lift from the suspect.

The women told the police that the man, who is known to all three of them, however, declined to drop off at the agreed spot, something that compelled them to attempt to get him off their vehicle, Supt Matlapeng said.

“It is reported that the driver and one passenger went out of the car in an attempt to pull him out, but he immediately rushed to the driver’s seat and drove away with the remaining passenger. He is said to have raped her and set the vehicle on fire before running away from the scene,” he explained.

Supt Matlapeng said the victim was treated at the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital and discharged the same day, while police investigations into the matter continue.

Meanwhile, the station commander has urged residents to exercise caution and enjoy the rest of the holidays responsibly. He said even though they did not record many major incidents in his policing area during Christmas and Boxing holidays, it was important to be responsible going into the new year.

“We advise people to enjoy responsibly and take precaution when celebrating with fire crackers to avoid fire incidents,” he said. ENDS
