Karabo Matonkomane, the current Minister of Academic Affairs and president hopeful for the upcoming Student Representative Council (SRC) elections could be in trouble for alleged money laundering.
According to a letter from the SRC executive, Matonkomane is facing suspension from the SRC with immediate effect pending the investigations into the matter. After the investigations are concluded, Matonkomane will be called for a hearing within the next twenty (20) working days.
“It is alleged that you provided information for payment of a sum seven hundred to one Pearl Ntshoga for her role in Letsholo Commission .You provided the said information with proper knowledge that Pearl Ntshoga was away in Palapye for her attachment. Which meant that it was impossible to discharge her duties in Letsholo commission. The sum was paid and the Secretary General is in possession of proof of payment.” the letter revealed.
Could this be Moono wa Baithuti internal fight for the SRC Presidential candidacy?
About a week ago Moono wa Baithuti (UB-UDC) experienced internal fights in regards to who to contest for the upcoming SRC elections. The first cabinet was led by Carter Joseph, after a few days, the cabinet was nullified with the introduction of a different cabinet led by Karabo Matonkomane.
By the look of things it seems that there has been a friction between Mass BNF (Botswana National Front) and University of Botswana Congress for Democracy Botswana Congress Party (UBCD-BCP). Apparently Mass BNF wants to kick UBCD-BCPCP out of the Moono wa Baithuti coalition with the replacement of University of Botswana Progressives (UB AP), this is evident as the new cabinet omitted UBCD-BCP candidates which were in the Carter-led cabinet, and introduced UB Progressives candidates.
With the suspension of Matonkomane from the SRC pending investigations and subsequent hearing, he might not be able to contest the upcoming SRC elections in an event where the election date comes before the hearing date, and that could give Carter a clear chance to contest as president.
