The newly refurbished National Stadium track, which cost P16.1 million, will be officially handed over to the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) on April 5. This marks a significant milestone for Botswana’s sporting infrastructure, as the track is now ready for use after extensive upgrades.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, BNSC Director for Business Development and Property Management, Makuke Makuke, provided an update on the progress of the track refurbishment project. Initially budgeted at P7.2 million, the project’s costs increased due to changes in scope, particularly the decision to incorporate blue and black layers in the track’s design. The Ministry of Sport had to approve the revised budget, ensuring the project met the new requirements.
Makuke further announced that the BNSC would officially hand over the refurbished track to the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on April 6, ahead of their international meet scheduled for April 12. This international event will showcase Botswana’s sporting talent and provide an opportunity for the country to demonstrate its commitment to high-quality sports facilities.
The National Stadium track, which was originally constructed in 2010 and underwent an upgrade in 2018, was built and classified in accordance with International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) standards. The recent refurbishment will ensure that the track continues to meet these international standards, providing a world-class facility for athletes in Botswana and beyond.
