Neo Moroka New Absa Chairman

Absa Bank Botswana has announced the appointment of Mr. Daniel Neo Moroka as the new Board chairman. Moroka is set to take over on the 1st of July this year.

The appointment comes after the resignation of the Interim Chairman Mr. Alfred Majaye Dube who announced his intention to resign on his statement on the 2020 annual report.

“Having been on the Board since November 2009, I have decided to retire from the Board after the conclusion of the 35th Annual General Meeting on 28 June 2021. I count it a privilege and honour to have been appointed to serve as the Interim Board Chairman over the last year and would like to thank our shareholders, regulators and other stakeholders for the continued support and confidence.” he announced.

Mr. Dube was taking over from the former Chairman, Mr Oduetse Motshidisi who also resigned on 12 August 2020.

The Bank believes it has secured a big catch in Mr. Moroka as he possess a wealth of experience from several boards, including the banking industry.

“His corporate experience includes financial services, retail and wholesale, oil and gas, mining, as well as the trade sectors. His extensive leadership and corporate governance experience has seen him leading organisations such as BP Botswana, BP Zambia and BP Southern Africa, while having served on the boards of listed entities such as Funeral Services Group and Sefalana Holdings.” the bank underpinned in their announcement.

In the banking industry, Moroka has served as Non-Executive director for the Bank of Botswana, National Development Bank (NDB), and Barclays Bank of Botswana.

Moroka has previously served as a politician. He was the legislator for Kgalagadi South from 2004 to 2009. During the same period he got appointed as the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry.

He described himself on LinkedIn, “Daniel Neo Moroka is currently Resident Director for the De Beers group of companies in Botswana. He is also former Minister of Trade and Industry for Botswana. Prior to that he had worked for the public service, Barclays Bank and BP in Zambia and South Africa. He has served on the Boards of many companies across industry including banking, manufacturing, mining, conservation, oil marketing and livestock. He is mentor to many young professionals in various disciplines both in Botswana and abroad.”

In terms of education, Neo Moroka holds a BSC (Magna Cum Laude) Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University and a Master of Science in Animal and Range Sciences from New Mexico State University, United States of America.
