The National Conference on Crime Prevention concluded today, March 20, 2025, with a strong emphasis on collaborative and community-driven approaches as the most effective strategies for combating crime. The conference, which brought together key stakeholders, highlighted the need for joint efforts in crime prevention and detection at local, regional, and international levels.
Closing the event, the Minister for State President, Honourable Moeti Caesar Mohwasa, stressed the importance of cooperation in policing, urging participants to continually review and invest in these collaborative strategies to tackle increasingly sophisticated criminal activities. He reiterated the concern of President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko regarding the rise in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and ritual killings, calling for a multi-pronged approach to addressing these pressing issues. The Minister further encouraged citizens to take an active role in crime prevention, emphasizing that safeguarding Botswana’s democracy and peace requires collective responsibility.
In her vote of thanks, Commissioner of Police, Commissioner Dinah Marathe, expressed appreciation to Minister Mohwasa for prioritizing the conference despite his demanding schedule. She also acknowledged the participation of various stakeholders, including Dikgosi, government departments, the business community, crime prevention committees, and police officers. Commissioner Marathe described the conference as enlightening and instrumental in strengthening relationships between the Botswana Police Service (BPS) and its partners. She reaffirmed BPS’s commitment to implementing the conference resolutions to enhance national security.
The event also welcomed international delegates from the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), highlighting the significance of regional cooperation in crime prevention. The presence of international partners underscored the shared commitment to addressing transnational crimes and ensuring safer communities across the region.
