“My 1st 2016 Resolution Is To Learn How To Dance Polka.” Mercy Thebe.
More and more people are warming up to Polka music. The first citizen of this country, President Ian Khama likes to Dance Polka Music, and well and it is through his initiative of President’s Day Competitions that gave polka a stage to reach the rest of Botswana. Now socialite Mercy Thebe also wants to be a great Polka dancer, and she has made it her 2016 first resolution.
Polka was originally called Boerewalf. It is said that the dance came to Botswana with the white farmers and Dutch people that settled in Botswana. It is the staple dance in the south western part of Botswana, northern part of South Africa and south east Namibia.
The validation of polka dance came through president Ian Khama. Thanks to Khama, polka has now reached mainstream. It is now recognized among Botswana’s traditional dances and last week it held its very mainstream festival at Tsabong Ecotourism Camel Park.
