The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced that, effective tomorrow, Primary Health Services currently managed by District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) will be transferred to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGTA) through District Councils. This strategic move is aimed at improving healthcare efficiency and ensuring broader access to quality health services for all Batswana.
Under the new arrangement, clinics, health posts, mobile units, and their personnel will fall under the administration of local government structures. The transition is expected to enhance service delivery by bringing healthcare management closer to communities, allowing for more tailored and responsive healthcare interventions.
The government has emphasized that this shift will not disrupt the provision of medical services but rather streamline operations and optimize resource allocation. By leveraging local councils’ administrative capabilities, the initiative aims to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure and improve overall service coordination.
This development reflects the government’s commitment to equitable healthcare access, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their socio-economic status or geographical location, receive timely and adequate medical attention. Authorities have assured the public that measures are in place to ensure a smooth transition, with minimal disruptions to ongoing healthcare services.
