The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that it will begin payments to tractor owners who were engaged by farmers during the 2024/2025 ploughing season. This move comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to support the agricultural sector and stabilize the economy following financial constraints.

Addressing Payment Delays

Speaking on the matter, Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary and Lands, Kabelo Ebineng, acknowledged that delays in payments were primarily due to a shortage of funds in the economy. He reassured stakeholders that the situation has improved, allowing the ministry to start clearing outstanding balances.

“The financial constraints we experienced had an impact on various sectors, including agriculture. However, as the economy recovers, we are prioritizing these payments to ensure that tractor owners and farmers receive what they are owed,” Ebineng stated.

Payment Schedule and Economic Impact

The payments will begin this month and extend into the next financial year to accommodate all affected tractor owners. The gradual rollout is expected to ease financial burdens on those who provided ploughing services, enabling them to reinvest in their machinery and sustain their livelihoods.

Ebineng emphasized that honoring these commitments is crucial for maintaining confidence in the agricultural sector. “Supporting tractor owners and farmers is essential for food security and economic stability. Timely payments will help ensure that preparations for the next farming season are not disrupted,” he added.

Boosting Agriculture Amid Economic Recovery

The resumption of payments aligns with Botswana’s broader economic recovery efforts. The agricultural sector remains a key pillar of the economy, and government support is vital in strengthening production capacity. By settling outstanding debts, the ministry aims to stimulate further investments in farming equipment and infrastructure, ultimately contributing to increased productivity.

Looking Ahead

As the country navigates economic recovery, the Ministry of Agriculture is expected to continue working closely with stakeholders to improve financial planning and avoid future payment delays. This initiative signals a positive step toward restoring trust and stability in the sector.

With payments now in motion, tractor owners can look forward to financial relief, while farmers will benefit from a well-supported mechanization system ahead of the next planting season. The government’s commitment to resolving these issues is a testament to its dedication to strengthening the agricultural industry and ensuring long-term sustainability.
