Minister of Defence and Security, Honourable Thomas Kagiso Mmusi, Bids Farewell to Botswana Police Service
In an event held yesterday in Gaborone (17 October 2024), the Minister of Defence and Security, Honourable Thomas Kagiso Mmusi, expressed deep gratitude to members of the Botswana Police Service (BPS) for their unwavering support during his time in office. Addressing the gathering, he commended the dedication and commitment of the police personnel, urging them to continue their service to the nation with the same vigor and professionalism.
Honourable Mmusi took the opportunity to reflect on some of the key milestones achieved under his leadership, particularly the expansion of police infrastructure across Botswana. He highlighted the successful completion of Mmathubudukwane, Semolale, and Letlhakane Police Stations, as well as the construction of 35 police posts and the commissioning of 28 new police stations. These efforts, he noted, were aimed at strengthening Botswana’s law enforcement capacity to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

In his speech, Honourable Mmusi extended his heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, for entrusting him with the leadership of such a vital ministry. In her welcome remarks, Commissioner of Police, Dinah Marathe, praised Honourable Mmusi for his visionary leadership, which she said had significantly advanced the Botswana Police Service. Commissioner Marathe acknowledged the Minister’s support in crucial areas, noting that it had contributed to the development and modernization of the BPS.
She pointed to several key achievements during Honourable Mmusi’s time in office, including:
• Increasing police enrolment to 1,000 recruits per cohort to bolster manpower,
• The proposed incorporation of Special Constables into regular police officer ranks,
• Technological advancements, such as the implementation of the Safer City Solution and the introduction of drone technology to enhance law enforcement capabilities.
These innovations, she said, were transforming the BPS into a modern, effective law enforcement agency aligned with Botswana’s Reset and Reclaim agenda.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Deputy Commissioner for Crime Investigations, Mr. Busang Lesola, highlighted the significant strides made in improving police service delivery under Honourable Mmusi’s leadership. He praised the Minister’s strategic guidance, which had empowered the BPS executive team and set a strong foundation for future success.
Mr. Lesola also echoed the sentiments of appreciation for Honourable Mmusi’s leadership, noting that his contributions would leave a lasting legacy within the police service.
