In a recent Q&A session, former President Mokgweetsi Masisi addressed the topic of the newly appointed specially elected Members of Parliament (MPs), with particular reference to the appointment of Bogolo Kenewendo. Responding to a question on the matter, Masisi emphasized the role of elected MPs in shaping the political discourse within the country.

“Ya di specially elected ke e tlogelela my honorable MPs, ba tla ba bolelela sentle ko parliament’eng,” said Masisi, which translates to “As for the specially elected ones, I leave it to my honorable MPs; they will explain it well in Parliament.”

Kenewendo is one of six candidates who have been elected as specially elected MPs. The full list of those appointed, along with their scores, is as follows:

Moeti Mohwasa – 43/60

Bogolo Kenewendo – 46/60

Steven Modise – 45/60

Lesego Chombo – 45/60

Nono Kgafela Mokoka – 43/60

Major General Pius Mokgware – 43/60

Kenewendo, a former Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, has garnered significant attention due to her qualifications and the political weight of her appointment. Her appointment as one of the specially elected MPs is seen as an important step in Botswana’s political evolution, with many expecting her to play a prominent role in the country’s legislative affairs.

Masisi’s statement reflects his position of allowing Parliament to address and explain the appointments of specially elected members, signaling that it is within the jurisdiction of the MPs to engage with and clarify the appointments and their implications in the parliamentary space.

The appointment of specially elected MPs is often a subject of political scrutiny and public debate, as it has the potential to shape the legislative direction and dynamics within the government. By deferring to Parliament, Masisi highlighted the importance of parliamentary processes in addressing concerns raised by the public and ensuring that these appointments align with the nation’s democratic principles.

As the newly elected MPs, including Kenewendo, begin their duties in Parliament, it remains to be seen how their roles will influence the political landscape and contribute to the governance of Botswana. The public will be watching closely, awaiting further explanations and developments from both Parliament and the appointed members.
