The Botswana National Front (BNF) joined other political parties and organizations in calling on the government to vaccinate the teachers.
In their press release which was issued earlier today, the party called on the president to address the issue in his speech. BNF made the call based on the reports by the Ministry of Health and Wellness that more than hundred teachers have thus far died due to COVID-19. This proves that “schools are the worst death traps.” according to the Party.
“The Botswana National Front (BNF) calls upon President Mokgweetsi Masisi to announce the vaccination of all Teachers and support staff in his national address today. All Teachers must be vaccinated before schools re-open on the 17th August 2021.” Justin Hunyepa, BNF Publicity Secretary pleaded.
The political movement is of the view that teachers and their spouses must be vaccinated as “there is no extra cost in vaccinating both, since they all fall within the eligible vaccination cohort”. They further observed that the spouse is exposed to the virus as the teacher works in a Covid infested environment and brings the deadly virus home. Hence the need to get vaccinated as well.
In the same breath, the BNF further advocated for immediate vaccination of other frontline workers including; all media workers; police, prisons, army officers, customs and BURS staffs, truck, taxi, bus drivers and informal traders. The BNF says these workers also deserve risk allowances for putting their lives at risk everyday serving the nation. “We pray the President is listening to the dying nation” said Hunyepa.
Meanwhile, in his speech a few hours back, President Masisi just announced the postponement of re-opening of schools by further three (3) weeks, but did not mention anything about the vaccination of the teachers.
