In a remarkable act of heroism, Letsile Tebogo, Botswana’s 200m Olympic champion, came to the aid of motorists stranded in floodwaters near the BTV/Block 3 traffic lights. The incident occurred amidst the country’s ongoing battle with severe flooding due to torrential rains.

Tebogo, renowned for his speed on the track, didn’t hesitate to assist when he encountered vehicles trapped in rising waters. His swift actions not only provided immediate relief to those in distress but also underscored the significance of community solidarity during challenging times.

The recent heavy rains have wreaked havoc across Botswana, leading to widespread disruptions. In Maun, residents are grappling with significant difficulties as incessant rainfall has caused substantial damage to both residential and infrastructural properties.  Similarly, the Mababe Bridge was temporarily closed due to rising water levels, rendering sections of the Mababe–Maun Road nearly impassable.

The education sector has not been spared. Pandagala Junior Secondary School in Tutume faced abrupt closure after torrential rains transformed the school grounds into a ‘lake,’ making it completely inaccessible.  In light of these challenges, Hon. Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, addressed the nation:

“Mr Speaker, my Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has noted the torrential rains that the country has been experiencing in the past few days and are expected to continue in the next few days. These have resulted in most of our roads being flooded and cut off, resulting in learners’ movement to and from school being affected. Therefore, Mr Speaker, as a Ministry responsible for Child Welfare and Basic Education, I find it fit to temporarily close the schools from tomorrow, Thursday 20th February 2025 to Monday 24th February 2025. The situation will be monitored, and communication to the public will be made on Monday afternoon. Let me further advise parents and guardians to ensure the safety of children at all times and also monitor their whereabouts. I thank you, Mr Speaker.”

This proactive measure aims to safeguard students and staff from potential hazards posed by the adverse weather conditions.

Tebogo’s intervention serves as a poignant reminder of the power of individual actions in times of crisis. His dedication to his community, both on and off the track, exemplifies the spirit of unity and resilience that defines Botswana.

As the nation continues to navigate these challenges, stories like Tebogo’s inspire hope and reinforce the importance of coming together to support one another.
