Human right lawyer Uyapo Ndadi has again opened a can of worms on the forever going issue of gay rights in Botswana. “Whatever the outcome of the LEGABIBO case today, let us not bring the Bible in it and and debate the judgment based on the arguments that were put before court! The case is before a court of law!” he said.
Uyapo has received a lot of criticism from his statement today. Some people are arguing that, we as people should abide by the Bible because it is God’s manual for mankind. The Lesbians Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana, wants the government to register them as an association. A newly released Afro Barometer report estimates that at least 43 percent of Batswana are not opposed to homosexuals, ranking the country among the most tolerant on the continent.
On the 15 January 2016, five judges sat for the Court of Appeal hearing of the LEGABIBO registration case; Thuto Rammogwe & 19 others Vs. The Staterepresented by Mr. Dick Bayford of Bayford and Associates and Ms Lesego Nchunga of Dow and Associates. The judgment date for the Appeal was then set for the 16th March 2016 at the Court of Appeal in Gaborone, and Botswana government lost their appeal against LEGABIBO registration!
