Lenyatso defends the government

Mbaakanyi Lenyatso, a local politician has come to President Masisi and the government’s defense regarding the measures the government has recently taken in an effort to curb the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19).

While most people are not happy about the government’s decision to impose a zonal lockdown, Lenyatso says it was a good call by the government. “There is no reason to make noise about zonal lock down unless we are attention seekers and hypocrites” he lambasted. Earlier today the Member of Parliament for Selebi-Phikwe West- Honourable Dithapelo Keorapetse got kicked out of virtual parliament for speaking against the zonal lockdown. Taking the issue to Facebook, Keorapetse posted, “I’ve been kicked out by the Speaker for speaking out against a crisis deliberately created by zonal lockdown…why are your leaders always creating crises and not held accountable?”

According to Lenyatso, some politicians are politicizing the issue in an effort to win political scores. Lenyatso is of the view that “We need to all be responsible lest we influence people to do wrong things and pay with our lives.” However, contrary to the government’s decision, Lenyatso feels the Gorvement could have kept the Boarding school students at school until after the holidays.

Taking a swipe at those who are not happy that the sale of alcoholic beverages has been banned, Mbaakanyi says it is not the government’s fault but of the alcohol consumers. He however did not address the economic implications the ban will have, the issue which has been greatly stressed by those in the industry.

While some of the neighbouring countries have vaccinated millions of their populations, Lenyatso argues that Botswana is not left behind in that regard. He further holds that “That the vaccine is not available is beyond all of us but we can do what we can to protect ourselves.”

Lenyatso is of the view that what the nation should be calling for for now is for the government to put up temporary hospitals. This comes after the Minister of Health and Wellness- Dr. Edwin Dikoloti announced that the health system is overwhelmed by COVID-19.

“Unfortunately the people who shout out loud saying open alcohol, don’t restrict zonal movements they close their kids in suburbs and have medical aid ready to take them to expensive hospital if anything happens. They are just trying to have you as a statistics to use in the next elections to demonstrate on how the government has failed to manage corona as we lost people, meaning you.”
