Beside benefitting through the taxman, and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the president says Botswana will benefit employment creation. The youth, who are are mostly affected by unemployment, will get some employment opportunities as the mine officially opened doors today.
At the peak of its construction, Khoemacau had two thousand eight hundred (2 800) people, the majority of whom were Batswana. Currently, the Mine has a staff complement of one thousand six hundred (1600) working as artisans, technicians and operators and 95 percent of them are citizens. Citizen owned companies have been engaged to provide critical services to the Mine such as ICT, Catering, Transport and Logistics, an indication that the Mine is committed to including Batswana in its operations.
Khoemacau uses the latest automated technology to improve productivity and safety. It also processes up to 40 percent copper concentrate prior to exportation to international market.
The mine is wholly owned by private company Cuprous Capital Ltd, which in turn is owned eighty-seven point nine percent (87.9%) by Cupric Canyon Capital LP. A company majority owned by funds managed by Global Natural Resources Investments (GNRI) and eleven point nine percent (11.9%) by Resource Capital Fund VII LP.
