As the Kgalagadi Ghanzi Drylands Ecosystem Project (KGDEP) approaches its conclusion in May 2025, oversight teams are actively evaluating its terminal phase to ensure its objectives are met.

Yesterday, the Project Steering Committee visited Masetleheng, a site where a campsite was constructed under the project to enhance financial benefits from natural resource exploitation while mitigating human-wildlife conflicts. The initiative aims to secure both livelihoods and biodiversity within the Kgalagadi landscape.

Managed by the Nqwaa Khobee Xeya Conservation Trust, the Masetleheng campsite directly benefits the Ngwatle, Ukhwi, and Ncaang communities. The visit provided valuable insights into the sustainability of the ecotourism model implemented through the project, assessing its socio-economic impact.

The site boasts five fully serviced campsites, which continue to support nature-based tourism and generate income for local communities. As the project nears completion, the focus remains on ensuring that the structures and initiatives established under KGDEP remain effective in promoting conservation and economic resilience in the region.
