Jessica Nkosi To Play Virgin Mary In A Theatre Production
The actress is set to go on stage as biblical character Mary in MARIA – The Story of The Son.
Described as a “ground breaking gospel musical,” MARIA, is the brain-child of World Gospel Powerhouse, producers of the renowned Crown Gospel Music Awards as well as the Trumpet Africa Gospel Music Awards.
Considering the fact that this is a story that most of the modern world has heard a thousand times over, the show’s Assistant Director, Siyanda Mwandla doesn’t want people to assume that this retelling is the same as all the others.
“It is a story like no other, the fact that it took so long to stage this production is a significant of how rich and well captured the story is. Many have told the story of Jesus but we bring you the one with an African flavour so that all nations will come to a good understanding of that he Jesus was for us all,” explained Mwandla.
The production will be a one-hour production, boasting popular TV and theatre personalities such as Jessica Nkosi and Brian Temba in lead roles as Mary and Joseph respectively.
In addition to the cast, “the audience can expect a beautiful story that will change the world and give a clearer picture of who MARIA was and the role that she played. It appeals to all audiences and will be told through magnificent music, powerful acting and stellar dance” said Mwandla.
The producers also plan to give young, unknown talent their chance.
“MARIA is about extending the scope of Gospel Music in SA. It challenges artists beyond the concerts, and church audiences thus creating a new market. We aim to taking the church and Gospel music market to theatre” said Zanele Mbokazi, Word Gospel Powerhouse President.
