Inside Duma Boko & Kaone Boko’s Marriage lies a story of love, faith, and unwavering commitment. Their partnership is marked not only by the shared values they hold but also by the challenges they have faced together in the public and private spheres. Married in 2015 in a ceremony steeped in cultural tradition, the couple has built a life defined by resilience, generosity, and a deep spiritual connection. Kaone, an accomplished lawyer from Lobatse, stands by Duma, the prominent political leader of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), as he navigates the demanding world of politics. Their marriage reveals a unique bond that endures through highs and lows, always rooted in love and mutual respect.
A Love That Began in Botswana
Kaone Boko, an accomplished woman in her own right, studied law at the University of Botswana, earning a Bachelor’s degree. A native of Lobatse, she attended Lobatse Senior Secondary School before pursuing her legal education. In 2015, she and Duma Boko tied the knot in a beautiful, culturally rich wedding ceremony, officiated by their pastor, Mmoloki Mogokgwane, of Apostolic Faith Mission Mogoditshane.
Their wedding day was nothing short of extraordinary. The couple wore traditional ceremonial Xhosa attire, a nod to the vibrant and diverse cultural heritage they hold dear. The celebration was in two parts: the first in Gaborone, and the second in Boko’s hometown, Mahalapye, where they honored his roots. Adding to the significance of their union, Kaone was expecting their first child when they were married, marking the beginning of their shared journey as partners and parents.
A Devoted Husband and Father
Kaone describes her husband as a deeply loving and committed family man. “He is a wonderful father. I wouldn’t have chosen a better man to raise our kids with,” she says, her voice full of admiration. Despite his demanding career in politics, Duma makes time for his family, showing a dedication that Kaone finds inspiring.
But it is Duma’s unshakeable faith that stands out most to Kaone. “He doesn’t draw from himself but from a source bigger than himself. He is deeply surrendered to God,” she explains. This spiritual conviction fuels Duma’s relentless commitment to his mission and to the well-being of the people of Botswana.
The Trials and Triumphs of Love
Life as the wife of a high-profile politician comes with its challenges. Kaone, however, stands by Duma with steadfast support, even when the going gets tough. In a deeply emotional message she wrote to him during the 2019 election period, Kaone expressed the profound admiration and pride she feels for her husband:
*“My husband, my mentor, my friend, my President. As I wake up next to you this morning and watch you sleep, I am filled with a sense of deep anticipation and pride. I have watched you risk everything for your mission and your country. I have watched you grow into the man you are this morning and the man that, by the end of the day, God willing, will be poised to be the next President of Botswana.
Boko, I am so proud of you. I am so amazed by you, and I am deeply grateful that you are in our lives and that you have the dreams that you do. I know in my heart that your whole life journey has led you here, and that today is your day. I know in my heart that the love you feel for the people of Botswana is real and extended to every man, woman, and child.
I want you to know as I stand by your side today: I love you, I support you, and I am in awe of all you are and everything you represent. Today is your day; today is Batswana’s day.”*
Generosity That Knows No Limits
Duma Boko’s generosity is legendary, though sometimes it tests Kaone’s patience. She recalls a moment that perfectly encapsulates his selflessness. The couple was financially strained, with only P200 left to their name. As they were adding up thebes to buy essentials, a familiar woman, who often asks for alms around Riverwalk Mall, approached Duma. Without hesitation, he handed over their last P200.
“At first, I was angry,” Kaone admits. “Why not give her P100 at least?” she thought, imagining they could have used the other P100 for bread and necessities. But over time, she’s come to appreciate the value of true giving, even when it costs them. “My children give to many causes now, and I now appreciate the value of giving, true giving,” she adds.
A Resilient Partnership
Kaone and Duma’s marriage has weathered public scrutiny, political pressures, and personal challenges. Yet, it is marked by an unwavering resilience. As Kaone puts it, “This man is resilient. I have seen him defy hunger, harassment, vilification, and all. He does not back down from a fight, no matter how big the enemy is.” Though she sometimes finds his principles to the point of stubbornness exasperating, she also knows they are part of what makes Duma the man she loves.
Inside the Boko household, there’s a balance of love, faith, and unwavering support. Despite the public demands of their lives, Kaone and Duma have built a foundation that remains rooted in shared values, the strength of their beliefs, and a commitment to one another and their family. Their story is one of love, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bonds that unite them.
