In an innovative approach to community policing, the No.8 Police District in Letlhakane has turned to one of the nation’s most beloved sports, soccer, as a potent tool for crime prevention. The initiative, spearheaded by Letlhakane Station Commander, Superintendent Michael Maphephu, aims to use soccer to divert men and youth from criminal activities while fostering unity between the police and the community in the fight against social ills, particularly Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The Haka Boys Social Club, established in 2017, started as part of an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign but has since expanded its scope to include crime prevention. The team is composed of players from across No.8 District, including Letlhakane, Rakops, and Orapa. Over time, the team has integrated local community members, creating a platform for collaboration between the police force and the people they serve.

“The introduction of this soccer team exemplifies how community-engaged policing can bring about positive change and highlights the importance of proactive measures in crime prevention,” said Superintendent Maphephu.

Through their participation in tournaments across Boteti District and other areas such as Palapye and Francistown, Haka Boys has found a way to spread critical crime prevention messages. One such tournament took place over the past weekend, focusing on raising awareness around Gender-Based Violence. The event was sponsored by Men’s Health and the Gender for Justice organization, along with one of the team’s major local sponsors, Lucara Botswana.

The one-day tournament saw Haka Boys compete against other local teams, including The Host, Dithoweng Oceans, and Dark and Scrum. The tournament’s champion was the Orapa Mine-based team, Dark and Scrum.

“This initiative has been met with enthusiasm from the people of Boteti. It offers fun and excitement while strengthening Police-Public-Partnerships in the fight against GBV and general crime in the area,” Superintendent Maphephu said optimistically.

Haka Boys’ impact goes beyond soccer, serving as a vital community engagement strategy that not only promotes sports but also plays a key role in combating social issues and fostering positive relationships between the police and local residents. Through such proactive approaches, the district is making strides in crime prevention and social cohesion.
