Despite a national crisis involving doctors opting out of emergency call duties, most hospitals across the country continue to function normally. However, concern is mounting in Palapye and Kasane, where a shortage of available doctors for emergency duties has begun to affect healthcare delivery.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, Minister of Health Dr Stephen Modise assured the public that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to providing quality healthcare for all citizens, regardless of their location.

Dr Modise acknowledged that while a large number of doctors have continued with their scheduled responsibilities, some have chosen not to take on additional emergency calls. This trend is especially evident in key referral hospitals and a few critical districts.

“In Palapye, five medical officers have informed the Chief Medical Officer that they will not be doing extra calls,” Dr Modise revealed. “In Kasane, six out of nine medical officers have taken the same stance. This has placed strain on the remaining few,” he added.

The Minister did not elaborate on the reasons behind the doctors’ decisions but emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to address the issue and support healthcare workers. He also called for calm and cooperation as the Ministry of Health continues to engage stakeholders in finding a sustainable resolution.

Dr Modise reiterated the government’s priority to ensure that every Motswana, whether in urban centres or remote locations, receives uninterrupted and quality medical care.
