Hon. Gofhamodimo Consults People with Disabilities in Gweta
This morning, Hon. Boitumelo Sendy Gofhamodimo, the Assistant Minister for the State President, continued her vital consultations with people living with disabilities in Gweta. The discussions centered around the recently enacted Disabilities Act of 2024, which aims to enhance the rights and protections of individuals with disabilities in the country.
During the session, Hon. Gofhamodimo emphasized the significance of the Disabilities Act, highlighting its provisions against discrimination not only towards individuals with disabilities but also towards their caregivers and assistance animals. “Kindly note that the Act prohibits discrimination against the carer of a person with disabilities, including an assistance animal or a disability aid,” she stated. This clause is particularly important as it reinforces the commitment to fostering an inclusive society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
One notable aspect of the Act is its stance on assistance animals. Hon. Gofhamodimo explained that while there may be entry restrictions for animals in certain spaces, this will not apply to specially trained assistance dogs that aid individuals with disabilities. Furthermore, Hon.
