Heat Wave Warning-The Department of Meteorological Services

PRESS RELEASE

DAT: 16th OCTOBER 2017

HEAT WAVE WARNING

The Department of Meteorological Services wishes to advise the public that the prevailing weather conditions of extremely hot temperatures over the Northern half of the country are expected to continue from the 16th of October until the 21st of October 2017.

Extremely hot temperatures are expected over Ngamiland, Chobe, North-East and Central Districts which might reach highs of between 38 C and 41 C with a 30% chance of thundershowers on Friday 20th October 2017.

These extremely hot temperature conditions are due to the persistence of the hot northerly continental air mass or wind flow.

However, over Gantsi, Southern, South –East, Kgatleng and Kweneng Districts we are expecting very hot temperatures between 36 C and 37 C. But over Kgalagadi District there is no heat wave excepted, since the temperatures will be warm due to the cool southerly wind flow.

The Department therefore advises members of the public in the affected areas to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from these adverse weather conditions. These measures may include among others:

• Drink more water regardless of your activity level.

• Avoid prolonged stay under the sun, if at all possible stay under the shade.

• Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella.

The Department will keep monitoring the conditions, and will update the public accordingly.
