The government has engaged the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) to approve an increase in power tariffs as part of efforts to address the ongoing energy crisis. This was confirmed by the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, who acknowledged the difficult decision despite political commitments to reduce electricity costs.

Kenewendo previously noted that she is aware of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) manifesto promise to lower power tariffs. However, she emphasized that the current financial and operational challenges at Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) have left the government with no alternative but to implement an interim tariff adjustment.

To mitigate long-term energy concerns, the government is also exploring alternative power sources, with new energy solutions expected to be in place by the end of the year. Additionally, a new power station is anticipated to be operational by 2027, which is expected to enhance the country’s energy security and reduce dependency on external electricity imports.

While the proposed tariff increase may pose short-term financial strain on consumers, the government has assured the public that it remains committed to finding sustainable solutions to Botswana’s energy challenges.
