Government Recognises Trade Unions As An Important 𝐒takeholder

His Excellency the President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi has assured Trade unions that Government recognizes them as an important stakeholder in the development of the country and nation building. He said Trade Unions are the largest organized structure among civil society.

Speaking during the official opening of the 43rd Amalgamated Workers Union conference today, President Masisi appreciated that Trade unionism has transformed through the years adding that, It is no longer about the issues of bread and butter, decent work, social security and development for its membership but they are also involved directly in the overall social and economic development of the country.

“I wish to express my profound gratitude to the efforts that have been made by the Trade Unions in Botswana, particularly your union. We are where we are as a country because of your contribution.” President Masisi said.

Furthermore, he assured Trade Unions of the government support in social protection system for the world of work in the country that they are working on.

He said it is a joint responsibility to ensure that the interests of the workers and employers are protected through the formulation of laws that are aligned with International Standards.

The President mentioned that pursuant to Government’s agenda of compliance to International Labour Standards, Botswana recently ratified Convention No. 81 and 129 on Labour Inspection and Labour Inspection in the Agricultural Sector respectively adding that it is a demonstration of the country’s commitment towards the protection of workers’ rights, and strengthening of the labour administration.

President Masisi urged unions to continue contributing to the development of their members and the country at large and not tire of pursuing their mandate of representing the workers.

For His part Trade Union Business consultant, Johnson Motshwarakgole thanked President Masisi for his prompt response to the unfavorable working conditions employees experienced in the past. He made note of the reinstatement of public service employees who lost their jobs following the 2011 public service strike.
