The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, has assured the public that the government is closely monitoring seismic activity at the BCL Mine in Selibe Phikwe. Speaking on the issue, Minister Kenewendo emphasized that authorities are committed to addressing the situation with a comprehensive and well-coordinated response.

Holistic Approach to Addressing the Situation

Selibe Phikwe has recently experienced increased seismic activity, raising concerns among residents about safety and the long-term impact of underground tremors linked to the former BCL Mine. Minister Kenewendo stated that the government is actively assessing the situation and will soon present a holistic approach to mitigate risks and protect the community.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of the people of Selibe Phikwe. We are actively monitoring the earthquakes at the BCL Mine, and we will soon present our holistic approach to addressing the situation,” she said.

Seismic Activity and Safety Concerns

The BCL Mine, once a major economic driver in Botswana’s mining sector, has been inactive since its closure in 2016. However, the abandoned underground tunnels and shafts have reportedly contributed to ongoing seismic disturbances in the area. While experts continue to assess the cause and impact of these tremors, residents have expressed concerns about structural damage to buildings and potential risks to livelihoods.

Authorities have deployed monitoring equipment to track seismic movements and evaluate their intensity. Minister Kenewendo assured residents that experts are working to develop solutions that will ensure long-term stability and safety.

Looking Ahead: Government’s Commitment

The Minister emphasized that the government’s response will involve a multi-sectoral approach, incorporating scientific research, engineering solutions, and community engagement. She also reassured residents that measures will be taken to prevent any further risks associated with the abandoned mine.

As the government prepares to unveil its official plan, residents of Selibe Phikwe remain hopeful that swift and effective measures will be implemented to address the ongoing seismic activity and ensure their safety.
