Have you ever met someone whose stories leave you in awe? Someone who casually drops a line like, “Oh, I drove Oprah,” and you’re left wondering if you heard them right. Yes, Oprah, as in Oprah Winfrey. That’s Moses Teko for you—a man whose journey from the streets of Francistown to becoming one of Botswana’s most inspiring tourism entrepreneurs is nothing short of extraordinary.

A Humble Beginning

Growing up in Francistown, Moses didn’t always dream of guiding celebrities. After completing Form 5, he faced the same pressures many young people do—finding a purpose. He moved to Maun to stay with a friend, where his days were filled with socializing and taking in the sights.

It was during these early days in Maun that Moses found himself drawn to the world of tour guiding. The stories, the adventure, and the connection to Botswana’s breathtaking landscapes intrigued him. He eventually joined Wilderness Safaris, where he underwent professional training and embarked on his first solo tour in the Okavango Delta—a moment that sparked his lifelong passion for tourism.

Guiding the Elite and Celebrities

Over the years, Moses has guided some of the world’s most prominent figures, from Oprah Winfrey to the Jonas Brothers, and his stories from these encounters are unforgettable.

When Oprah arrived in Botswana, her celebrity status caused a stir, with people clamoring for selfies at the airport. But Moses stayed grounded, treating her like any other client. “I ushered her in like everyone else,” he recalls. “Her status didn’t matter to me. I could tell she was surprised by my approach and even asked if I knew who she was.”

Although Oprah had initially been assigned a more senior guide, she was so impressed by Moses’ professionalism that she requested him personally for the rest of her trip.

His time with other high-profile clients, including filmmakers and artists, has been equally memorable, with each experience enriching his perspective and reaffirming his passion for sharing Botswana’s beauty and stories.

The Birth of Africa Culture Journeys

With 19 years of experience in tourism, Moses co-founded Africa Culture Journeys, a safari company based in Maun. The company blends traditional safari experiences with cultural storytelling, offering a unique and immersive perspective on Botswana’s heritage.

“Africa Culture Journeys isn’t just about wildlife safaris,” Moses explains. “It’s about showcasing our culture, our people, and the untold stories of Botswana to the world.”

The company has already attracted global attention, with bookings secured as far ahead as 2027. Beyond business success, Moses takes pride in mentoring the next generation of tour guides, ensuring they uphold the same high standards of service and storytelling that have defined his career.

A Legacy of Inspiration

From Francistown’s streets to guiding global icons, Moses Teko’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, professionalism, and perseverance. Through Africa Culture Journeys, he’s not only redefining Botswana’s tourism landscape but also ensuring its rich culture and natural wonders are shared with the world.

And if you’re lucky enough to hear his stories firsthand, you’ll understand why his clients—celebrity or not—walk away inspired by his unique take on Botswana’s beauty.
