First Lady Kaone Boko has raised concerns over the lack of concrete action following the signing of conventions and policies aimed at ensuring the full inclusion of children with special needs. She emphasized that while Botswana has committed to various frameworks supporting inclusive education, their implementation remains inadequate.
Speaking after her visit to Batlokwa National Primary School’s special education unit, Ms. Boko highlighted significant gaps in resources and support for vulnerable children. She observed that many children with special needs still lack the necessary facilities, learning materials, and specialized care required to thrive in the education system.
Ms. Boko urged the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, which oversees social welfare programs, to strengthen efforts in addressing these critical challenges. She stressed the need for increased funding, better training for educators, and improved access to assistive devices to ensure children with special needs are not left behind.
Her remarks come at a time when disability advocates continue to call for more inclusive policies and practical interventions to support learners with special needs. The First Lady’s appeal reinforces the urgency of translating policy commitments into meaningful action that guarantees equal opportunities for all children in Botswana.
