European Union Delegation Pays Courtesy Visit to Botswana’s National Assembly Speaker

The European Union (EU) delegation, led by Ambassador H.E. Ms. Petra Pereyra, made a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Botswana’s National Assembly, Honourable Dithapelo Keorapetse, this morning. The visit marks another step in the long-standing relationship between Botswana and the EU, a partnership that has endured for several decades.

A Warm Reception for a Long-Standing Partnership

During the meeting, Speaker Keorapetse expressed his deep gratitude to the European Union for its unwavering support over the years. He highlighted the EU’s role as both a developmental partner and a champion of democracy in Botswana.

“We express our warmest gratitude to the EU for having been both a developmental partner and a partner in democracy because we have had these dialogues since 1981 when the first EU office was opened here in Gaborone,” Hon. Dithapelo Keorapetse remarked.

The dialogue, which has been ongoing for over four decades, has played a pivotal role in fostering the relationship between Botswana and the EU. The speaker acknowledged the EU’s invaluable contribution to the country’s political and economic development.

Ambassador Pereyra reiterated the European Union’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Botswana, emphasizing the shared values of democracy and the rule of law that have been the foundation of their cooperation.

“As our partnership with Botswana spans many many decades, we are pleased to be here to continue the work with the new government as our partnership has been based on shared values of democracy and rule of law,” stated H.E. Ms Petra Pereyra, the Ambassador of the European Union.

The EU has been instrumental in supporting Botswana’s democratic journey, assisting in various sectors including governance, sustainable development, and the promotion of human rights.
