The Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DIS) has refuted the allegations that the directorate sought to arrest former President Khama.
According to the spy agency, contrary to media reports that the agency applied for a warrant of arrest, the truth is that it is a search warrant which was requested for.
“There were media reports alleging that the Directorate had lodged a warrant of arrest appication against the former President at the Lobatse High Court. However, following the November 21 2021 verdict by the same court addressing a search warrant application on behalf of the Directorate, the same media platforms glossed over their distortions to report that a search warrant (not warrant of arrest as previously claimed) had been denied by the court. This was not accidental as this is part of a dedicated campaign to create the impression that any attempt to take lawful action against the former President, is necessarily harassing him.” said Edward Robert, DIS Public Relations Director.
DIS says that reports that the agency is seeking to arrest former President Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama were nothing but “malicious disinformation campaigns in which facts are deliberately distorted” to create an impression that the former President is being harassed. Robert says the “disinformation campaigns” were formulated to cushion Khama and other persons of interest against lawful scrutiny by the Directorate and other investigating entities.
The DIS says despite the propaganda peddled, the Directorate will continue to perform obligations for which it was established without fear or favor. The Directorate says it is its lawful mandate to do everything in its power and without prejudice to act in the best interest of national security at all times.
“The Directorate has a legally established obligation to seek search warrants against any individual where it has reasonable grounds that such a warrant would enable it to investigate threats to national security or perform its functions as established by the Intelligence and Security Service Act.” Robert asserted.
