The Directorate of Intelligence Services and Security (DISS/DIS) has condemned the allegations that the institution is harassing its former Director General- Isaac Kgosi.
In the last couple of weeks, the DIS have been on Isaac Kgosi’s case following allegations of unlawful possession of weapons. In the past two (2) weeks, Kgosi was arrested more than three (3) times. In one of his court appearances, one DIS Officer who was escorting Kgosi was caught on camera denying Kgosi water.
As the events of Kgosi’s court cases unfolded, the former DIS boss was subjected to a very questionable detention by the DIS. Though Kgosi got detained, the magistrate denied ever making any ruling to effect Kgosi’s arrest.
“The Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) has noted ongoing public commentary regarding court appearances and detention of former Director General, Col. Isaac Kgosi. The Directorate is however concerned by the unfortunate misinformation emerging from some quarters which wrongly suggests that it has overstepped its mandate to harass its former Director General Col. Isaack Kgosi. An impression should never be created therefore that by playing its role in investigations and other processes with implications for national security, the Directorate is necessarily harassing the involved individuals.”
According to the DIS, “The consequence of this misinformed view” is that, an impression will be created that one or such individuals are above the law and should never be subjected to lawfully established processes.
Since its inception, the DIS has been the face of fear in the country. Though its mandate is to protect the nation, the nation has mostly felt unsafe, fearing the DIS.
The response by the Directorate comes after Dr. Unity Dow’s response to the State of the Nation Address (SONA), where she condemned the DIS for operating above the law, and for its big brother mentality over other government departments.
Dow is the specially elected Member of Parliament, and the only Motswana to have served in all the three arms of government. She served in the judiciary as a judge, in the Executive as a cabinet Minister, and currently in the legislature as a Member of Parliament.
