The Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for Support Services, Mr Solomon Mantswe, paid a significant visit to the Special Support Group (SSG) headquarters in Gaborone on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. The visit was aimed at fostering direct dialogue between BPS leadership and the elite paramilitary unit to strengthen operations and morale.
Addressing SSG personnel during the engagement, Mr Mantswe emphasized that the interactive session was designed to clearly define expectations between management and SSG members. He noted that open conversations are vital in identifying operational needs, ongoing challenges, and possible solutions that can enhance service delivery.
“The purpose of my visit is to engage with you, understand your perspectives, and work together towards solutions,” Mr Mantswe stated. “This platform allows us to align our goals, identify where support is needed, and ensure that every officer is empowered to perform at their best.”
Mr Mantswe acknowledged ongoing concerns such as limited resources and the shortage of staff accommodation, affirming that the Botswana Police Service (BPS) Management is actively working to address these issues. He assured personnel that plans are in motion to equip the unit with the necessary tools and infrastructure required for improved efficiency and readiness.
Highlighting the importance of interdepartmental cooperation, the Deputy Commissioner reaffirmed BPS’s commitment to the One-Organisation Approach, a model that promotes collaboration among support services, units, and branches within the force. He urged officers to maintain the high standards of professionalism that define the police service and to continue supporting one another in pursuit of their shared mission.
“You are not operating in isolation. The strength of the organisation lies in unity and a shared purpose,” he told the assembled officers.
Mr Mantswe also took the opportunity to commend the SSG for its unwavering commitment in maintaining national security. He particularly praised the unit’s instrumental role in supporting frontline police efforts during the 2024 General Elections, noting that their dedication contributed significantly to the peaceful and secure environment experienced across the country.
Commander of the SSG, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Godfrey Lesego Phonchi, expressed deep appreciation for the visit. He highlighted that such engagements not only boost morale but also provide clear direction and encouragement to officers under his command.
As part of his itinerary, Mr Mantswe toured key SSG facilities and ongoing projects, including the accommodation project, upgraded ablution blocks, and the Block E housing units which were damaged by fire in March this year. He commended the resilience of the SSG and reaffirmed management’s commitment to restoring and improving infrastructure.
The visit by the Deputy Commissioner marks a continued effort by BPS leadership to stay connected with personnel on the ground, address operational realities, and foster a supportive and responsive police service.
