His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi met with the Delimitation Commission this morning as they handed over their report.
The Delimitation Commission was established as per section 64.1 of the Constitution of Botswana on the 13th May, 20222 and was sworn in on the 27th May 2022. Delivering his remarks, the Commission Chairperson Judge Mokwadi Chris Gabanagae highlighted that they started consultations on 20th June 2022 in Kachikau and completed in Gaborone on the 28th November 2022. Judge Gabanagae stated that the consultations were held at DiKgotla and Community Halls. Judge Gabanagae informed President Masisi that the Commission covered 104 places and a total of 106 consultation meetings were held.
Gabanagae shared the challenges they faced during their consultations such as having to adhere to COVID-19 protocols of restricting meetings to 2 hours. He however, reiterated that the commission mitigated the limited time challenge by accepting submissions and comments from the public in writing through the District Commissioner’s offices across the Country.
In acepting the report, His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi thanked the Commission on behalf of the Government and Batswana at large for a sterling job they did. President Masisi emphasized that the process of engaging the Commission shows that Batswana respect the rule of law, consultation process and democracy, and that these have been the cornerstones of unity in the Country.
