Debswana Collaborates with Botswana Police Service to Capacitate GBV Responders
In a significant move to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Botswana, Debswana has partnered with the Botswana Police Service (BPS) to enhance the capabilities of GBV responders at mining sites. This collaboration aims to equip responders with essential skills and knowledge to effectively address and manage cases of GBV, thereby fostering a safer environment for all individuals, especially vulnerable groups.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Ms. Goitseone Ngono emphasized the BPS’s commitment to professional policing and improving accessibility for victims. She highlighted the various initiatives implemented to make reporting GBV incidents easier and more confidential. Among these efforts is the provision of walk-in reporting at police stations, alongside a toll-free telephonic reporting service. This telephonic option is crucial as it promotes confidentiality, allowing victims to report incidents without fear of stigma or repercussions.
Moreover, Ms. Ngono announced the establishment of Child Friendly Centres across the country, designed to provide a safe space for children to report incidents of violence. Currently, there are eight such centres in operation, including one located in Letlhakane. These centres not only create a child-friendly environment but also ensure that young victims can seek help and support in a safe and supportive setting.
The collaboration between Debswana and BPS reflects a proactive approach to combating GBV in Botswana. By empowering responders and enhancing reporting mechanisms, this initiative seeks to create a comprehensive support system for victims and promote a culture of accountability and safety within communities. As this partnership progresses, it is expected to yield positive outcomes in the fight against GBV, ultimately contributing to the well-being and safety of all citizens.
