Police officers across Botswana have been lauded for their exceptional commitment, resilience, and professionalism during the recent General Elections. Commissioner Dinah Marathe expressed her heartfelt appreciation while addressing officers in Selibe Phikwe and surrounding areas on December 5, 2024.
Unbiased Service During Political Transition
Commissioner Marathe applauded the officers for their impartiality and dedication, which she highlighted as instrumental in ensuring a peaceful regime change. She emphasized her personal acknowledgment of their efforts, which she had also conveyed through an Appreciation Letter sent to all officers last month.
“Your unwavering professionalism during the elections did not go unnoticed. You carried out your duties without bias, fostering a peaceful exchange of governance. For that, I thank you,” said Commissioner Marathe.
Alignment with the New Administration
The Commissioner encouraged officers to align fully with the vision of the new government, led by President Advocate Duma Boko. She praised the Botswana Police Service (BPS) for its regional and international reputation for professionalism and expressed confidence in its continued excellence under the new administration.
She noted the President’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, human dignity, and citizens’ rights—core police functions. President Boko’s expectations include addressing key issues such as:
- Upholding the rights of all citizens and police officers.
- Implementing robust measures against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), violent crime, drug abuse, and cybercrime.
“These priorities are not new to us. They require us to refine our service delivery to align with the new government’s vision,” Commissioner Marathe reminded the officers.
A Message for the Festive Season
In closing, Commissioner Marathe extended her best wishes for the festive season, urging officers to serve Batswana with humility and pride. She encouraged those on duty during the holidays to remain vigilant in protecting lives and property.
Gratitude from Divisional Commander
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Peter Gochela, Divisional Commander for the North Central Region, expressed his appreciation for the Commissioner’s visit and engagement with officers in his area. He thanked her for her support and motivation, which he said would inspire the officers to continue their excellent service.
Commissioner Marathe’s commendation highlights the critical role played by the Botswana Police Service in maintaining peace and security during pivotal national moments. As the country moves forward under new leadership, the police remain a cornerstone of stability, committed to upholding the rule of law and serving citizens with unwavering professionalism.
